Tips for a Successful Experience

Identify the employers that you are interested in meeting; this can be done by doing some research on the agencies themselves.  A great place to begin is to check out the agency’s Web site.

  • If they do not have a Web site, you could call the agency and ask to speak with someone.
  • Bring multiple copies of your résumé. (Cover letters are not necessary.)
  • Business casual or business formal attire are both appropriate.
  • When meeting recruiters you should always do the following:

    1. Introduce yourself and give them your name and expected graduation date, as well as offering a copy of your resume.

    2. Indicate why you are interested in their agency. (You need to do your homework to do this!)

    3. Ask for any informational materials as well as a business card for whom you are speaking with.

    4. Always thank the recruiter!

    5. Be friendly and well-spoken!

  • It is recommended that you send thank you notes to the agency representatives whom you spoke with, even if you may not be interested in their agency at this point in time.

*A side note: You are representing Penn State, the Sociology Department, and yourself. Please keep this in mind during all of your interactions with agency representatives.

Attire

Business Casual or Business Formal are appropriate.  What does this mean? Wear nice pants or skirts, nice shirts or sweaters (button-up shirts for men), and nice shoes. Please don’t wear flip-flops, shorts, t-shirts, jeans, etc. Remember, you are trying to make connections and impress employers. Jeans with holes leave impressions-just not the kind of impression you want to make.
