The Second Annual Penn State Department of Sociology Student Paper Awards was held on Tuesday, May 12th, 2009, hosted by the Sociology Student Paper Competition Committee.A departmental luncheon was held to recognize graduate students' awards and accomplishments. Each winner was given a certificate of achievment and a monetary award. The two overall winners were asked to present their papers during the luncheon. For the Best Published Paper, the winner is Matthew Hall for his article forthcoming entiltled "How Diverse Are U.S. Suburbs?"
Matt has general interests in urban sociology, social demography, and migration/immigration. Most of his research focuses on the residential and economic incorporation of new immigrants to the U.S. His dissertation compares patterns of segregation and locational attainment for five Asian and five Latin American immigrant groups. Matt also studies racial/ethnic differences in labor market returns to human capital, public program use among poor immigrants, and metropolitan diversity and homelessness. An revised version of this article is forthcoming in the March 2010 issue of Urban Studies.
For the Best Working Paper, the winner is Jason Houle for his abstract entitled A FALL FROM GRACE?
Jason research interests include social stratification and mobility, disparities in health and mental health, and the life course.
Congratulations to Ashley Frost who was this year's winner of the Graduate Student W. LaMarr Kopp International Achievement Award.
The Kopp Awards annually recognize those at Penn State who have been extraordinarily effective in contributing to the advancement of the international mission of the University. The selection committee was very impressed that Ashley's grantsmanship and
publications "exhibit a significant international component as well
as intense participation in African field projects".
Congratulations to Sonja Siennick who recently won a Penn State Alumni Association Dissertation Award. This award provides funding and recognition to outstanding full-time doctoral students who have passed their comprehensive exams and have received approval of the dissertation topic, or to M.F.A. students in their final year. This award is considered to be among the most prestigious available to Penn State graduate students and recognizes outstanding achievement in scholarship and professional accomplishment.
