Michael Light, a first-year doctorial student in the Crime, Law, and Justice program, recently published a report (co-authored with Mark Hugo Lopez) with the Pew Hispanic Center. The report, titled “A Rising Share: Hispanics and Federal Crime,” uses data from the U.S. Sentencing Commission to document the changing demographics of those sentenced in federal courts between 1991 and 2007. The report was released on February 18, 2009 and on February 19 the report appeared in several major papers, including the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune. The States News Service and the Associated Press also carried the story, with the AP story appearing in about 280 outlets.
