FACULTY

DEMOGRAPHY POSITION

The Department of Sociology, University Park campus, invites applications for a tenure-line appointment in demography (associate or professor) to begin in the August, 2010. All areas of research specialization are welcome.  Candidates should have a strong academic reputation, well-developed teaching and mentoring skills, and a demonstrated record of securing external funding.

SOCIAL STRATIFICATION, INEQUALITY & SOCIAL CHANGE POSITION

The Department of Sociology, University Park campus, invites applications for a senior tenure-line position in the general area of social stratification, inequality and social change, to begin August, 2010. We are interested in scholars with broad interests in social stratification and research interests in the causes and consequences of stratification, inequality and social change processes within and among groups, organizations and societies. We seek candidates at the advanced associate professor or professor rank. Candidates must have a strong publication record, a demonstrated record of securing external funding, and a serious commitment to mentoring graduate students.

TERRORISM POSITION

The Department of Sociology and Crime, Law and Justice invites applications for an advanced assistant or associate professor in Criminology or Sociology with expertise in terrorism and one or more areas of political violence, religious violence, social movements, political movements or religious movements for appointment beginning in Fall 2010.  The successful candidate will also work at Penn State's International Center for the Study of Terrorism, with responsibilities including research support on current and new grants related to terrorism, as well as assisting in the development of new projects and proposals. Faculty positions at Penn State involve substantial research support; in addition, junior positions offer significant release time.   Candidates should have a substantial research record, demonstrated potential to win external funding, and good teaching credentials. The successful candidate will display a mastery of the terrorism studies literature, as well as a mastery of rigorous empirical research methods.  

Candidates must have their Ph.D. in hand by fall 2010. MANAGING DIRECTOR - JUSTICE CENTER FOR RESEARCH

The Penn State Justice Center for Research invites applications for a Managing Director.  Carrying out research in criminology and assisting local, state, federal and international communities with criminal justice-related research and policy decisions are the goals of the new Penn State Justice Center for Research.  The Managing Director will report to the director and be responsible for developing and implementing new initiatives, projects and proposals, supervising ongoing initiatives, and representing the director in various capacities with faculty, students, staff and the public.  Further duties involve oversight of communications, publications, and publicity, and grant writing.  The specialty area is open but priority will be given to those who have experience in sponsored research and/or a research focus in policing, drugs, or gangs. 

Priority will be given to candidates who have completed their Ph.D.  Applicants should send a cover letter explaining their research, a current CV, samples of scholarly writing, and three references.  The position is a full-time, fixed-term appointment.  The initial appointment is for two years with opportunities for renewal.  Electronic submission is preferred.  Please send to justicecenter@la.psu.edu    If materials cannot be submitted electronically, please mail to Managing Director Search, Justice Center for Research, 211 Oswald Tower, Box JCR-10, University Park, PA 16801.
