Stephen Matthews
Associate Professor of Sociology, Anthropology, and Demography
507 Oswald Tower Personal: http://athens.pop.psu.edu/CtrPRI/DirBio.cfm?PeopleID=32 |
Ph.D., University of Wales, Cardiff (United Kingdom), 1991.
Matthews research interests focus on the connections between people and places focusing on vulnerable populations, in particular low-income families in diverse urban and rural contexts across the United States. Matthews is currently exploring the use of geoethnography (the integration of ethnography and GIS) to help better understand the spatial and temporal components of human behavior. He is specifically exploring the degree to which families are able to jump scale to take advantage on non-local resources, opportunities, and social networks. Matthews has a long standing interest in spatial demography and the use of GIS in applied and basic research. Much of the work to date has focused on either population and environment research or health and wellbeing research. Matthews is the Director of the Geographic Information Analysis (GIA) Core and Senior Research Associate in the Population Research Institute. The GIA Core webpage can be found at http://www.pop.psu.edu/gia-core/.
Teaching interests are in Health, Disease & Society/Medical Sociology, Urban Sociology, Spatial Demography and GIS/Spatial Analysis.
